Fisherman’s Wharf
About 6 blocks up the road from Pier 39 is Fisherman’s Wharf. Fishing boats and small chowder houses line many of the piers in the area. Fisherman’s Wharf is about a four block area, here is where you will find the authentic San Francisco waterfront. Boudins Bakery who are famous for San Francisco style sourdough bread have their original bakery in the wharf area. You can smell the bread baking from blocks away.

Many local chowder houses line the wharf, these shops serve up some of the freshest seafood in the area. If it’s fresh they will cook it up. We didn’t have enough time to eat at these places, but on our next trip back we will definitely stop in. The Boudin Bakery trucks are seen all over San Francisco this 175 year old bakery are still using it’s original recipes. The moisture in the air at the Fisherman’s Wharf location give the Sourdough its unique texture and flavour.

The smells coming from the chowder houses along with the fresh sourdough bread being baked teased the senses. A person could spend the whole day down on Fishermen’s Wharf.

We bought a ticket for the Sky Star Wheel, this 10 minute ride above the wharf was amazing seeing the city from this vantage point was worth the 30 dollar ticket.

We had lunch at the famous Franciscan Restaurant, the Crab was on point but the Fish and Chips were sub par and very disappointing. The hype of the Franciscan in reviews makes me wonder sometimes what food critics are thinking. But they serve good crab, a full Dungeness Crab was 49 dollars for a 3 pound crab.

Now this funky little place called the Buena Vista serves an amazing Irish Coffee. I had a great conversation with John the bartender and he whipped us up a couple of Irish Coffees, not really my jam but they were good. But the conversation was better, John is a long time San Jose Sharks fan and we had a great conversation for about 20 min. John has served over 2 million Irish Coffee’s in his 22 years as a bartender at the Vista. We ate here the day before and I had a good Patty Melt and Monica had a good burger. Sitting at the bar is the best way to see and enjoy this establishment.
Go to Fisherman’s Wharf, stay the day, eat, drink and have fun. The Cable cars run all day , spend the 13 dollars and ride the cable cars. This is a can’t miss destination when you go to San Francisco, so glad we got to spend a few hours on the wharf.
