Cape Breton Pizza
Heading up the road from Halifax on our trip north to Cape Breton Island to see Monica’s family . Once we cross the causeway you know we are on the Cape. Thing are a little different here in a good way, the people are amazing the local food is usually top notch. I know I am going to raked over the coals here. But I don’t understand the obsession with Cape Breton Style Pizza and the fascination with it. Every time we go back to the Cape we always have to go for pizza, and always the same, some over proofed, greasy ,heavy piece of dough with marginal toppings and cheese albite the cheese is tasty . I am always disappointed, all I want is a great piece of pizza. When we return to Nova Scotia for Christmas I want to experience a good pizza with help of my family and friends please tell me where to go. Because my faith in humanity for pizza is lost on this island. Please comment on my Facebook page and please tell us where to go. Janes and Papa J’s are off the list, tried each of their pizza multiple times and its the same.
For my family and friends in the rest of Canada, there is actually a style of Pizza called Cape Breton . And its the known for Combination Pizza which gives it the title, with its Pepperoni, Mushrooms and Green Peppers and its sweet Tomato sauce. Me being from Edmonton, we don’t have a style here but we have some good pizza places and we have some that are absolute garbage. Being raised in Saskatoon, the Greek restaurant owners had a monopoly on the pizza business so most of the pizza where created the same. Pizza in Saskatoon is a thicker crust with lots of meat and topping and cheese but the sauce has unique flavor because of cinnamon in the sauce.

With me living in Edmonton Area the past 25 years there are so my styles, thin crust, thick crust, chains ect,, The pizza I like the best is from Royal Pizza its been around since the 1960s and it very similar to the pizza I grew up on with lots of topping and cheese. its a solid pie.

Visiting Toronto last November, New York Style Pizza seems to be the pizza of choice , Monica had a few slices with Cheese and Pepperoni it was ok . As you can see the toppings are few and far between.

At home, I make my own pizza with my own dough and bake it on my BBQ on a pizza stone at about 600 degrees. I use 00 flour, yeast, salt, water and olive oil. I usually make Pepperoni & Cheese, the BBQ does a great job and its a good pizza.

We tried some of the topped rated Pizza in Santa Monica rated by none other that Barstool Sports Dave Portnoy and found it to be ok but nothing to write home about you can see it in our Joe’s Pizza review. Here is where it gets cloudy for me you will see pictures of a Cape Breton Combination Pizza below and you say WTF. I get that its cooked in a pizza deck oven but the crust isn’t cooked thoroughly and its so over proofed and heavy. Its burnt on the crust they way the slice the peppers you can see the grease leaking through the pizza box. Please tell do I always get shitty Pizza or is this normal. I will be setting up a survey on what 3 pizza place to go to next in the North Sydney/ Sydney area and restore my faith in good quality Pizza. i am hoping for the Christmas Pizza miracle.

Looking forward to everyone’s opinion of Pizza on Cape Breton.
