Lawsons Fish & Chips
Overview
Last weekend we tried to go and try out Edmonton’s newest Fish and Chip Shop Lawson’s Fish and Chips and found it lined up out the door. Today I went with my good friend John Dampf to try Lawson’s Fish and Chips.
Review
Arriving shortly after 12 the place was almost full, we got the last table in the place, and then placed our order, a 2-piece Halibut for John and a 2-piece Cod for myself. We both added a side of gravy and got curry sauce to share and fountain pops, the bill came to 70 dollars. In their world, a 2 piece is a large and a 1 piece a regular. The place was buzzing with lots of people coming and going, most feeling quite happy with the experience

The menu is a traditional, English Fish and Chip Shop, with no healthy options here. They had plenty of staff working (looks to be family operated) 2 gentlemen on the fish and chips, a lady taking orders, and 4 support staff, running food, and cleaning tables. We waited about 15 min, and our fish arrived hot and fresh.
Both plates looked good, I had one large piece of cod and a smaller piece, John’s Halibut looked good, with lots of chips. I was excited to try the curry sauce, the flavor was good, but the sauce was runny. I have eaten fish in the UK on many occasions, I am only comparing it to what I ate in the UK. The gravy was traditional gravy mixed out of a package nothing to write home about, but it was ok. My first bite was the chips, proper chips not fries, they were salted well and went well with the gravy. The chips are cooked in their separate fryer, at a lower temperature, and there was a cook constantly cooking fries. The fish batter was crispy but I was disappointed they used cod tails and not cod fillets, the fish on the tail end was overcooked, and the fish wasn’t greasy but the oil was starting to go south as you could taste the oil on the fish.

I enjoyed the chips; John said his Halibut was good, but he also noticed the oil taste on the fish. The shop is clean, the staff are friendly, the décor is true English Chip Shop, and they did it right on so many levels with red phone booths, and other neat items. Would I come back again, yes, Is it the best fish and Chip Shop, no. But the chips are so good, better than any other Fish and Chip Shop, they just need to work on the fish a bit.

Final thoughts
Lawson’s is a good Fish and Chip Shop, not as good as the Atlantic Kitchen in St Albert, but still a solid Mom and Pop joint. It gets 7.0 out of 10, the chips were fantastic.
